National Importance

DISTINCTIVE is a multi-disciplinary collaboration of 10 universities and 3 key industry partners from across the UK’s civil nuclear sector.

The Government has outlined a national goal to establish safe and cost effective solutions to the UK’s nuclear waste management and decommissioning issues, and consequently promote the UK as the global leader in this area.

The consortium and the UK

In the 2013 UK Nuclear Industrial Strategy, the Government stated that there is a need for a strong and vibrant Research and Development (R&D) community in the UK that is focused on the issues of safe storage for spent nuclear fuels and other wastes.

To support this strategy, we will:

Bring together leading researchers from multi-disciplinary R&D backgrounds.
Foster strong links with industry R&D communities.
Build a greater capacity for R&D within the UK.
Provide young researchers with the required high level skills.
Support research with a focus on UK needs.
Provide valued employees to the nuclear industry.
Show the international nuclear community our world-leading R&D capability.
